Aviator Onesie

These were too cute not to make. With my Silhouette Cameo, I can now make pretty much anything! I found a pair of aviators online, traced them in the Silhouette program, and cut them out! Then I ironed it onto a onesie and sewed around it. The only problem I had, was the "wire" parts of the glasses were very fragile! I accidentally made them too big the first time, so I have 2 pairs of aviators for adults if anyone wants them! :)

Fire Roasted Tomatoes

I wanted to make my tomato soup, but didn't have any fire roasted tomatoes.  But I did have a TON of green tomatoes, turned red via brown paper sack, that my friend Erin gave me.  I decided to use half of them for this, and half of them for some salsa! These were so easy, and don't have near the preservatives that the canned kind have.  

Cut them in half from stem to bottom.

De-seed them as much as possible. I just used my finger.

Lay them on the pan like this and drizzle with olive oil. Stick a little bit of garlic under each tomato. 

Turn the broiler on High. 

Broil for 8-10 minutes, or until they look "Fire Roasted"

Here they are! I took the skins off for my soup, and put them back under the broiler for a few minutes.  I saved all of the juices and put them in my soup too! 

Everybody's got to have a hero... Part 1

In 5th grade we do a large hero project.  This year to get the kids thinking about heroes and to avoid having 13 MLK and 10 Amelia Earhart's, we started talking about traits of a hero.  First we started off by defining a hero and an idol. 

I gave examples of heroes and asked the kids to come up with some people that they idol. 

Next, we did think-pair-share coming up with a list of qualities that we would want heroes to have.  I had each child share 1 trait, and I wrote it on the board. 

Then we talked about what we would want our heroes to have. As a teacher, I might want to have a hero who is compassionate, a leader, successful, smart, dependable, thoughtful, inventive, and kind.  But as an athlete, I might want someone who is strong, brave, committed, a dare devil, adventurous, and trustworthy.  So I had them pick 10 that they would want their hero to have. They wrote it in this graphic organizer.

The next day, I had my students define 10 of these words. Then as a class we discussed people who had these characteristics.  It was a great discussion, and the kids were all willing to share!

Hold On To Your Loved Ones Tight!

This week has been a tough one! It is never good when you know people in the news! Especially when it is BAD news!

Vander & Jack cousins of mine were killed in a horrible car accident. Vander was coming home from surgery where he had a cancerous tumor removed. 

Today, I heard on the news on my way to school that a bicyclist had been struck at 80th and Lamar. I was hoping the whole way to school that it wasn't a student. It was. One of mine. Luckily he is OK!

So take some time to hug your loved ones a little tighter today and every day!

Please keep Mardee, Kadee, Will, and the rest of their family in your thoughts prayers. 

Loaded Mashed Potato Casserole

We had an October Thanksgiving to use up a turkey we had.  The turkey came out ok, but the mashed potatoes were the star of the meal! 

This is the only picture I got of the finished "Thanksgiving" meal. 

Ingredients:

• 6-7 large baking potatoes peeled and quartered
• 1/2 cup skim milk
• 1 8oz package cream cheese, softened
• 8oz light sour cream
• 2 teaspoons dried parsley
• 1 teaspoon garlic salt
• 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
• 1 clove garlic
• 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
• 8 slices thick bacon crispy cooked and crumbled
• salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:
Preheat oven 350 degrees.

Boil potatoes for 15-20 minutes or until soft. Drain potatoes and and beat with a mixer until smooth. Add milk, cream cheese, sour cream, parsley, garlic salt, garlic, and nutmeg. Beat at a medium-high speed until nice and creamy (be careful, the liquid likes to splash). Add salt and pepper.

Spoon into a 9×13 baking dish that has been sprayed with cooking spray. Top with cheddar cheese and bacon. Bake for 30 minutes.

Funny Tea Towels

My friends and I have made it a tradition to visit the Holiday Mart every year.  This year, I was sure to take notes on the, "Hey I can make that" stuff.  I came home with a list of things! One of the easiest were these cute tea towels.

When I was at Target, I found them 4 for $3.99. I snagged a package to try it out.  I designed the towels on my Silhouette software, and then mirrored them.  Then I printed them on iron on transfer paper that I have had for a few years.

Then I cut out as much of the white space as I could, and ironed them on to the towels! Super easy, and it only cost me $4 to make 4 towels.

They were $10 each at the Holiday Mart! Now I need to think of some more creative sayings to put on them. I think they will make great gifts!
